The Budget You Didn’t Know Your Podcast Needed | #265
Jen Rogers, Podcast Strategist: [00:00:00] In episode number 264. I shared with you the wild idea might just be what your podcast needs. In today's short mini episode, we are continuing with this wild hair improve how you show up when you podcast.
No matter where we are in our podcasting expertise, there is always an opportunity for us to take it to the next level. Whether we are fine tuning our skills, whether we're doing voice training, upgrading our equipment, auditing our shows, or
whether we are making changes aligned with what's happening in our ideal client's market. I. Responsiveness is key. Hey there. I'm Jen Rogers, Podcast Strategist and your host of Simplify Podcasting. I believe we can simplify podcasting on either side of the microphone, when we start with the end in [00:01:00] mind.
Today's episode is all about budgeting. Now wait, what? Before... Before you say, wait, I don't want to talk about the money, honey. It's all good. We are not talking about money. We are talking about a different kind of budget today. . . Stick around and I'll share with you exactly what I mean.
Reminder, this Wild Hair episode is short and sweet and designed for you to implement immediately, and it won't take you more than just a few minutes to make this one change to improve how you are showing up when you podcast on either side of the microphone. In the previous episode, number 264, the wild Hair was for you to set up an opportunity for your ideal listener to connect with you so you can go a little bit deeper on what it is that your audience needs right now. Do you remember what that was?
It was a brief, 15-minute conversation to [00:02:00] clear the decks, create some time in your schedule, and invite your clients in to booking time with you to share what it is that they need next, and that way you can create content around that. I'm offering the same thing for you.
Head on over to coachjenrogers.com/coffeechat. I've got slots open between now and throughout Saturday, May 10th, to connect with you, and when we connect on a call together, my mission is to serve you; to hear what it is that you want help with, so I can create content around that, whether it's a podcast episode, whether it's going live in the virtual podcast school with a masterclass, whether it's responding to you and Facebook Messenger with some brainy ideas that I have.
I am an idea generator, so I will offer up ideas regardless of the method of answering the question. I want to sit with you and hear what's happening for you right now as you nuzzle up to your [00:03:00] microphone to record binge worthy episodes.
For today's episode number 265 of Simplify Podcasting, we are going to talk about the budget. Let's dive in.
Have you ever found yourself recording something and you think, oh, this is not right. There's something wrong. The words aren't coming together in the right way. Maybe it's too "me focused" and not, not enough focused on my audience and what my audience needs. Or you have a script, and in your script you say, okay, I want to cover these specific points.
And as you're talking, you realize. If there's another point that comes up, or you might scrap your script all together and say, okay, this is not the right direction for this episode. It happens to all of us, and that's because we are taking care of our words. And the reason that we take care of our words is we know death and life are in the power [00:04:00] of the tongue.
That's what Proverbs 18:21 reminds us of our words. Are potent. They carry weight. As podcasters on either side of the microphone, our words do have the ability to create. So we want to use words that invest in our audience, that encourage our audience to grow, that teach our audience a specific thing that invite our audience into a call to action.
Regardless of what we're sharing on an episode, it's important to keep the listener in mind. Now you might be thinking this episode is about the listener. It's actually not. It's about you and it's about your words and your word budget. What is a word budget?
Is it the number of words that you can say per episode? Is it the number of words you speak out in one day? Is it the [00:05:00] number of words you bite back when you're irritated with somebody? Well, I suppose it could be all of those things. A word budget for today's episode is to think about how many words are you allowing, have you budgeted for negative self-talk?
Listen, podcasting, it is clearly not a spectator sport when you are recording episodes. You must be fully present and there are times that things are not going to go the way that you want them to go. It actually happens even when we're not recording episodes. My question for you is, what is your word budget for negative thinking?
Before you hit play on this episode, think back a moment. Think about the word budget that you set for negative thinking. Did you have one today? It's not like I wake up every day and say, here's my word [00:06:00] budget for negative thinking.
Yet, when I do not set a boundary for denying dwelling on those things that are not going well, when I degrade the work that I've done, it's easy to spiral. And in that spiraling, that's where you actually add more words to the negative self-talk and you spiral more. When you are spiraling, it's very difficult, impossible to be creative.
Yet you are creative. Podcasting is creating something new. With your thinking, with your mindset, with your values, with your level of encouragement and teaching and inspiration.
Your mission for today is to think about what word budget are you willing to tolerate for negative self-talk.
I know that I am writing down in my planner as I'm recording this, [00:07:00] that I am going to ask myself that question every day this week,
What is my word budget for negative self-talk? I'm going to start with zero. That's, yes, that's what I'm going to put down in my planner. It's a lot like, uh, what is that? Zero based budgeting. I do not have room for it. And I suspect you don't either. You don't need negative self-talk. Instead, we need to lean in and focus on the work that God has given us to do and give ourselves space and grace to know that we are iterating our way to awesome.
That means we're going to make a lot of mistakes, and that's okay because we are in this together. So that's your mission for today. Short and sweet. What is your negative self-talk word budget for the work that you are doing today? And stay alert for the messages that you are sending to [00:08:00] yourself.
We know that we are created in the image of God, and in the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. And in him, in Jesus, all things were created. I suspect Jesus might talk to you and me a little bit differently than how we talk to ourselves on those days that things don't go very well at all.
So what do you say? Are you willing to give this a whirl? Are you willing to be attentive and give yourself a zero-based word budget for negative self-talk? I'd love to hear from you. Please, please, please book a call so we can connect on what it is that you're working on. I'll give you a healthy dose of encouragement, support and some podcaster love, because this is hard.
The gifting God has entrusted to you. It is a stewardship responsibility. It does include saying no to speaking things over us that create death. [00:09:00] Instead, Jesus invites us to speak life into our work and into other people.
Head on over to coachjenrogers.com/coffeechat. Book a 15-minute convo with me. It's all in preparation for what comes next and what comes next is the very next step in what we are designed to do. What's coming next inside our community? We're kicking off some masterclasses inside the Virtual Podcast School in addition to the Profitable Podcast bootcamp that starts May 13th at noon Eastern. If you're not on the list for that yet, be sure you register. Head on over to .coachjenrogers.com/podcastbootcamp to get on the list and yes, attend live or catch the replays or do a little bit of both depending on what your schedule is, so you can add to your bottom line with the work that you are creating as you record episode after episode.[00:10:00]
Alright. God bless you. I will catch you tomorrow for the next Wild Hair episode so we can improve our podcast expertise in one small step every single day.
